WOVEN VS NON-WOVEN BAGS – WHAT IS THE DISTINCTION?

One of the most frequent questions we get asked by our clients is: what is the main difference between woven vs. non-woven promotional bags?  Our blog explains technical and design features to help you design and manufacture unique branded products. Now that we have launched our new website for Patented Reflective Bags, it is important to understand not only the benefits of reflective piping but also the raw materials involved. This case study looks at woven vs. non-woven bags and the main distinction between the two. Both materials make great drawn tote bags, but they are distinctly different. Each type has unique benefits and characteristics.

Woven vs. Non-Woven Bags – What is a Woven tote bag?

Woven bags are made from fabric that has been woven to give the fabric capacity. The process of weaving involves joining separate threads together to make a single piece of material. Doing this over and over again creates one large piece of cloth. The cloth is then used to creation tote bags in a number of different styles and shapes.

Benefits of using woven fabrics:

  • Woven cloth is flexible
  • It is able to maintain its shape well.
  • Woven fabrics are strong; therefore, bags can be reused multiplex times.
  • Bags can be put in the washing machine
  • Can be designed in a laminated or matte finish. Non-laminated woven bags are not consult as they will have a cheap look.

Woven vs. Non-Woven Bags – What is a Non-Woven tote bag?

Non-woven bags are manufactured using any other material that is not woven. The product can be produced mechanically, chemically, or thermally. Non-woven fabric is also made from fibers. However, the fibers are entangled together through whatever process is applied to them, as opposed to being woven together.

See below the benefits of using non-woven fabrics:

  • Non-woven fabrics can be more multipurpose then woven bags.
  • They are also used in a wider range of applications.
  • Non-woven fabrics are generally used in arts and crafts because they offer many of the same advantages of woven cloth but are less expensive.
  • As many native country and organizations begin to ditch plastic bags non-woven bags are becoming popular replacements.
  • Non-woven bags accommodate more printing and customization options.
  • Non-woven can be made with or without stratification. This means diagram can then be silk screen printed onto the bags.

Here is the difference in countenance between laminated and non-laminated material:

CUT YOUR USE OF PLASTIC, PLASTIC, AND PLASTIC…

You are not new to recycling. You’ve been doing it for years and it’s a big part of your daily routine. You’ve become an expert at identifying what plastics you can and cannot recycle. Now focus on another significant part of eco-friendly living: reduce your use of plastic.

That plastic can be bad for us and bad for the conditions. Recent studies have shown that there’s more plastic than plankton in some of the remote parts of our oceans. And there are growing reports on the human health effects of chemicals used in plastic products. Let’s also not forget that plastic is built from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource and a major contributor to global warming.

THE BEST OPTION TO SHORTEN PLASTIC IS NONE OTHER THAN NON-WOVEN FABRIC

Non-woven fabrics provide specific operations such as absorbency, liquid repellence, elasticity, stretch, softness, strength, flame redundancy, washability, cushioning, filtering, bacterial barrier and sterility. In summation with other equipment they provide a spectrum of products with diverse properties and are used alone or as components of apparel, home furnishings, health care, engineering, industrial, and consumer goods. Nonwovens do not depend on the intermingle of yarn for internal cohesion. Intrinsically they have neither an organized geometrical structure. They are basically the result of the relationship between one single fiber and another. This provides nonwoven fabrics with feature of their own, with new or better properties (absorption, filtration) and therefore opens them up to other applications.

Introduction to D-CUT Non Woven Bag IN BD Fabrics

  • Non-woven fabrics are felted or bonded together
  • Non-woven fabrics have many uses in textile products specifically as internal strengtheners and to assist sewing, such as interfacing
  • Many non-woven fabrics are disposable products
  • Laminated fabrics may not be non-woven but coupla together with heat or glue

Nonwovens are in fact products in their own right with their own prominence and performances, but also weaknesses. They are around us and one uses them every day, often without knowing it. Indeed they are frequently hidden from view.

Nonwovens can be made absorptive, breathable, droppable, flame resistant, heat sealable, light, lint-free, moldable, soft, stable, stiff, tear-resistant, and water repellent if needed. Obviously, though, not all the properties mentioned can be combined in a single nonwoven, particularly those that are contradictory.

Non-woven fabrics are formed in two main ways: they are either felted or they are bonded. The fabrics use fibers rather than yarns; these are laid randomly or in a uniform way to make web-like layers. They are held together by either the felting or bonding process.

Felted Fabrics

Wool felt is the most common non-woven fabric and is emanated by using short-staple fibers from wool or other animal hairs (such as camel). Wool is an ideal fiber because its surface has natural hooks like scales, which when moisture, heat, and vigorous movement are applied, interlock with each other. The heat and damp conditions cause the fibers to curl up, and the scales locking together prevent the fibers from straightening out again. When you wash a natural wool jumper and it shrinks in size the jumper is actually felting and you can’t make it bigger again no matter how hard you try to stretch it back.

There are three main systems of making bonded fabrics:

  1. Dry laid: a web of fibers is laid in a drum and hot air is injected to bond the fibers together.
  2. Wet-laid: a web of fibers is mixed with a solvent that softens the fibers and releases a glue-like substance that bonds the fibers together and then the web is laid out to dry.
  3. Direct spun: the fibers are spun on to a conveyer belt and glues are sprayed on to the fibers, which are then pressed to bond; if the fibers are thermoplastic polyurethane (will change shape with heat) then the glue is not needed in this process. Hats, jackets, toys, and snooker table covers are some commonly used for wool felts. Bonded fabrics are used for disposable products such as clothes, medical masks, and table linen. They are also used for interfacings for stiffening and strengthening clothing and dressmaking (e.g. Vilene).

Laminated Fabrics

Laminated fabrics are made by strike two or more fabrics together. Many fabrics require extra insulation or protection, and the foam is bonded to provide this. Sometimes consolation can be an issue with PVC fabrics, so a softer fabric may be bonded instead of using a lining. Making a fabric breathable and impermeable may require lamination of a membrane, as in Gortex and Sympatex.

Properties of non-woven fabrics

  • Non-woven fabrics are not very strong
  • Non-woven fabrics can be made in a province of weights
  • Non-woven fabrics do not fray
  • Non-woven fabrics Can be made into molded shapes
  • Non-woven fabrics can be made from recycled fibers
  • Non-woven fabrics can be made to be liquefiable
  • Non-woven fabrics can be made to attenuate with heat and act like a glue (used for hemming)
  • Non-woven fabrics can freely pill (bobbles from on the surface)
  • Non-woven fabrics may be weaker when wet
  • Non-woven fabrics can be made permeable (water can pass through)
  • Non-woven fabrics are cheap to produce
  • Non-woven fabrics will also take on some of the properties of the fiber used in the web (e.g. wool felt is warm and insulating; polyester mummify is lightweight and elastic)

Origin and Advantages of Non-Woven’s

The origins of nonwovens are not glamorous. In fact, they resulted from recycling fibrous waste or second quality fibers leftover from industrial processes like weaving or leather processing. They also resulted from raw materials restrictions e.g. during and after the Second World War or later in the communist-dominated countries in Central Europe. This humble and cost dominated origin of course lead to some technical and marketing mistakes; it is also largely responsible for two still lingering misconceptions about nonwovens: they are assumed to be (cheap) alternative; many also associate them with disposable products and for that reason did consider nonwovens as cheap, low quality, items.

Not all nonwovens end in disposable applications. A large part of the production is for durable end-uses, like in interlinings, roofing, geotextile, automotive or floor covering applications, etc. However, many nonwovens particularly light-weight ones are indeed used as disposable products or incorporated into disposable items. In our view, this is the ultimate sign of proficiency. Disposability is only possible for cost-efficient products that condense on the essential required characteristics and performances and provide them without unnecessary frills.

Most nonwovens, disposables or not, are high-tech, working items, e.g. with ultra-high engrossment or retention for wipes, or with softness, strike-through and no wetback properties for those used into hygiene articles, with outstanding barrier characteristics for medical applications in the operation room, or better strain possibilities because of their pores dimension and distribution, etc. They weren’t manufactured with the aim of disposability but in order to fulfill other requirements. They mainly became disposable because of the section they are used in (hygiene, healthcare) and of their cost-efficiency. And disposability very often creates a besides benefit to the users. As disposable items have never been used before, there is then security that they do possess all the properties required as opposed to reused laundered fabrics.

New technology in non-woven fabrics

Non-woven fabric production such as felting and bonding is often used by manufacturers when producing fabrics with some of the new vegetable-based yarns, as these tend to have shorter staple fibers. Designers are able to design their own original fabrics with the felting method. The industrial application of non-woven fabrics is ever-increasing and includes filtration systems, medical users, and insulating purposes. The development of micro-encapsulation technology (enabling active substances to be fixed to the surface of the fiber or fabric) means many non-woven fabrics can be perfumed or anti-bacterial. Newer fibers like Local can be made into non-woven fabrics, giving better absorption and high wet strength for products such as medical swabs. Nonwoven fabrics are engineered fabrics created from fibers, continual filaments, or cut yarns. They are flexible, porous, products consisting of one or more fiber layers. The separate fibers may either be preferentially oriented in one point of the compass or may be deposited in a random manner. Non-woven are bonded by chemical, thermal, or mechanical methods into textile products. They are mainly planar structures.

Characteristics of Nonwoven Fabric

The particular set of properties that a non-woven fabric may have is obedient upon the combination of factors in its production. The range of characteristics is wide.

  1. The appearance of non-woven fabrics may be paper-like, felt like, or similar to that of woven fabrics.
  2. They may have a soft, resilient hand, or they may be hard, stiff, or broadly with little pliability.
  3. They may be as thin as tissue paper or many times thicker.
  4. They also may be translucent or opaque.
  5. Their porosity may range from low tear and burst strength to very high tensile strength.
  6. They may be fabricated by gluing, heat bonding, or sewing.
  7. The drivability of this type of fabric varies from good to none at all.
  8. Some fabrics have excellent launder ability; others have none. Some may be dry-cleaned.

Nonwovens are engineered to provide particular properties suited to the desired end uses. For example, diapers can be manufactured of two different layers of nonwoven fabrics: an outer layer composed of a wetting-agent treated polyester that will permit rapid fluid penetration, but with minimal lateral wicking, and an inner layer of absorbent rayon. Thin, high-filtration nonwoven fabrics for surgical masks can be created of micro-denier fibers; thick, fluffy, insulating nonwovens for ski jackets can also be made of micro-denier fibers. Research continues in order to achieve or perhaps exceed certain properties of conventionally manufactured cloth.

End Uses of Non-woven Fabric

The use of non-woven products continues to expand. The many uses of nonwovens may be classified as disposables, durable consumer goods, and industrial materials. All these areas are making increasing use of this kind of merchandise because of its low cost and its suitability for many needs. Disposable nonwovens are basically made for one-time use; but some, such as dust cloths, may be laundered and reused a few times. General solicitation include personal hygiene products, such as diapers and sanitary napkins; medical products such as surgical gowns and drapes; surgical and industrial masks, bandages, wipes and towels; bibs, and even costumes for special events. They have recently become popular for lightweight ”fun” clothes that can be washed a number of times. Durable nonwovens have wide applications. Consumer durables include both family goods and home appointments, such as for draperies, furniture upholstery, mattress padding, towels, table cloths, blankets and carpet backing and clothing and apparel, such as for caps, linings, interlinings, interfacings and the reinforcement of other fabrics. Many manufactured uses include filters, insulation, packing materials, roadbed stabilization sheeting, or road-building materials geo-textiles and ceiling products.

Specialty Nonwoven Products:

Fusible Nonwovens: A fusible nonwoven fabric is any nonwoven fabric with a heat-activated viscous resin coating. More than half of the interfacings used in apparel construction are fusible. They are placed between fabric layers to provide body, shape, support, additional strength, and foundation. Heat and squeeze, applied for a specified time, activate the resin to bond the interfacing to the shell fabric. Fusible interfacings have some disadvantages. They sometimes consequence a stiff or board hand; differential shrinkage between the fabrics being joined may produce a rippled garment, and separation of the two fabric layers may occur when improperly applied interfacings are cleaned. Other special nonwoven products are film fabrics, coated fabrics spurious suede’s, and leathers, etc.

Definition Of Woven Fabric

Non-woven’s are flexible, porous, products consisting of one or more fiber layers. The individual fibers may either be preferentially oriented in one direction or may be deposited in a random manner. They are coupla by chemical, thermal, or mechanical processes into textile products. Non-woven’s are mainly planar structures. This comparatively young branch of the textile industry has expanded enormously after the second world war because of the high production rates and the resulting cost savings.

Contemporary non-woven fabric dates to the early1930s. At that time, a few textile association began experimenting with bonded materials as a way of utilizing cotton waste. The first commercial production of the products now called non-woven’s began in 1942 in the United States in an effort to produce fabric directly from fibers. The market for non-woven products has experienced tremendous growth and has the potential for more. Nonwovens may be serial as either disposable or durable goods. Disposable or nondurable, nonwovens comprise such one-time use products as diapers, medical dressings, household wipes, and disposable protective clothing. Durable goods are used for clobber interfacing, automobile headliners, road underlayment, and carpets.

Raw Materials

Polyester is the most frequently used fibers in the United States; olefin and nylon are used for their strength, and cotton and rayon are used for absorbency. Some acrylic, acetate, and Vinson are also being used. Fibers are selected on the basis of their properties and expected performance in end uses. New, first quality fibers are preferred over reused or reprocessed fibers. Both staple and filament fibers are used, and it is possible to blend fibers of different lengths as well as fibers of different generic groups. The selection of fibers depends on the product proposed, the care typically gave it, and the expected or desired durability. As in the manufacture of all fabrics, the cost of the fibers used is important, as it in turn influences the cost of the final product.
